A dental hygiene exam includes a thorough examination of the head, neck and oral tissues designed to detect issues that could progress into larger concerns. There are different types of examinations depending on the appointment booked.
On your first visit a complete exam is completed which involves the head, neck, and oral tissues. Hygienists look for growths, lumps, discolorations located on the head/neck area. Gum tissues are assessed for indications of gingivitis or periodontal disease. Charting is completed of all fillings and anomolies to set a baseline on which to compare future visits to ensure your oral health is improving or maintaining. Any findings outside our scope of practice are referred to the approprate profess
All areas previously assessed on the New Patient Exam are reviewed. Comparisons are made and from those comparisons we decide together with our clients to maintain treatment as it is or adjust the treatment plan to improve results.
If you have a concern, but are not yet due for your next recall, you will be covered for a specific or an emergency exam. Only the area of concern is examined. If it is something we can help with, it can be addressed at this time.
Our dental hygiene programs are designed to help you prevent disease of the teeth and gums. They include a combination of the following based on your particular needs.
Scaling removes the hard deposit from your teeth known as tartar or calculus. Calculus acts as a irritant to the gum tissues and helps harbor bacteria leading to gum disease.
Polishing removes the soft deposit and stain from the teeth. The soft deposit known as plaque consists of bacteria. This bacteria breaks down sugars that creates the acid that causes cavities.
Fluoride has had a lot of controversy surrounding it since it's discovery. When used properly, it is one of the most important tools in the fight against tooth decay. Fluoride binds with the enamel crystals creating a stronger barrier against cavity causing acids. It is key to greater protection of the teeth at all ages. If you have gum recession, multiple fillings or find you need a filling every time you visit your dental professional, then fluoride is your friend.
